"ZODIAC — As one can plainly see from the current listings, this is not the time of year one can expect to find exceptional movies being released. All the more reason to cheer for Zodiac, the first great film of 2007.
I approached this film with great trepidation, recalling the almost unbearable tension of David Fincher’s Se7en...but Zodiac isn’t so much about a serial killer as the hunt for a serial killer. There are still some potent scenes of violence in the early part of the story, but the lion’s share of the story is about the reporters and detectives who doggedly pursue every avenue to find their man.
Here again I lucked out, as I didn’t have clear memories of the real-life case that plagued the San Francisco area in the late 1960s, and I’d read nothing about this film before screening it.
Zodiac presents the most unusual—and riveting—movie manhunt in recent memory, even more amazing because it’s true. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Robert Graysmith, the San Francisco Chronicle cartoonist who becomes obsessed with the killer, and whose books about the case inspired James Vanderbilt’s screenplay. His fine performance is matched by costars Robert Downey, Jr., Mark Ruffalo, and Anthony Edwards, each one completely inhabiting his character. The technical aspects of the film are flawless, capturing the look and feel of the period as well as its major settings—a newspaper city room, police departments, file morgues, and the like. Zodiac is long but gripping, from start to finish."

David Fincher talks "Zodiac"
 
“Zodiac” was to have opened in January, to make it eligible for the Academy Awards...
 
..But according to some accounts, distributor Paramount balked at releasing the even longer version delivered by Fincher, who contractually had final cut, and, asked him to make changes. When he declined, they elected not to mount an Oscar campaign and release the film in March, traditionally a time when movie attendance is low and the studios unload films they consider to be lacking in commercial potential...
 
 
Fincher, who admits to “doing my best to avoid those kind of political games and all the speculation that goes with it,” is somewhat coy with the subject, saying he is “really all not that certain what was going through those guys’ heads.”
“Truth is, I really didn’t have the film in the shape I wanted it in December anyway,” he says. “I don’t know what their thinking is, but I assume they have research and experts in this field.
“After all,” Fincher adds with obvious sarcasm, “these are the guys who were working `Nacho Libre.’”
 
...“The studio knew from the beginning this film was not another `Se7en,’” says Fincher, “even if that may have been what they hoped for. The things that made me want to make it may be some of the same things that other people find problematic. I liked the idea that there was not a neat ending, But I also find the ending satisfying, because it’s real, it feels true. Some things just don’t get wrapped up neatly. Sometimes, you just have to put things away, call it done, say `I’ve done the best I can do according to what I believe in,’ and get on with it.” ...

НУ БК тоже в свое время провалился. Что не мешает его считать одним из любимых фильмов.

ПС. Может до полтинника дотянет.

ПС2. Кстати, "Семь" стартовал с 13.4 лямами. Закончил со 100 в США и за 300 в мировом прокате.

Но многие критики и зрители называют "Зодиак" лучшим фильмом Финчера, что лично для меня важнее кассовых сборов...
 
И на счет Кабанов.  У "Зодиака" 2,362 залов, R-рейтинг и продолжительность в 158 минут а у "WILD HOGS" 3,287 залов,  PG-13 и продолжительность в 99 минут...

И всё это не помешало Зодиаку провалиться...
Что, впрочем, ничего не говорит о самом фильме. Совсем ничего.

У Финчера, собственно, только два фильма принесших прибыль - Seven и Panic Room (самый слабый его фильм), Alien 3 и The Game едва покрыли свой бюджет, ну а лучший его фильм (ИМХО) Fight Club вообще безбожно провалился. Основную прибыль его фильмы собирают за пределами штатов.

Loder: You obviously have an affinity for the serial-killer genre. I'd imagine you don't want to make a career of it, but you are considering making a film version of "Torso," aren't you?

Fincher: I'm interested in that. I'm not interested in the serial killer thing, I'm interested in Eliot Ness. I'm interested in the de-mythologizing of Eliot Ness. Because, you know, "The Untouchables" was only two or three years of the Eliot Ness story. There's a whole other, much more sinister downside to it. And so that's of interest to me. We want to make it the "Citizen Kane" of cop movies. I also want to make a CG animated movie. And I've been talking about doing a remake of a movie I really liked in the '70s, "The Reincarnation of Peter Proud." Ever see that? Мне даже страшно пересматривать этот фильм во-второй раз. Такой страшный... Во время прсмотра фильма все время из уст вырывается, "Слава Богу, это вымысел", а когда вспоминаешь, что фильм на основан на реальных событиях, становится еще хуже...
