Bonus material on the 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition includes a never-before-seen interview with Spielberg created specifically for this release, a retrospective documentary and more.

The stunning high definition presentation of Close Encounters of the Third Kind: 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition contains all three cinematic versions on just one 50 GB Blu-ray Disc, with bonus material included on a second disc, and is made possible by new breakthroughs in home entertainment technology. This marks the first classic Spielberg film ever to be released on a pre-recorded high definition disc format.

A legendary film, Close Encounters of the Third Kind was nominated for eight Academy Awards.1 Richard Dreyfuss (Jaws) has the starring role of electrical lineman Roy Neary, as he sets out to investigate a mysterious power outage and experiences a life-changing “close encounter.”

The Original Theatrical version of Close Encounters of the Third Kind was released on screens in 1977 and was never available on home video. Spielberg released a re-edited Special Edition theatrically and on VHS in 1980 wherein he deleted several smaller scenes and added other sequences including scenes of Dreyfuss inside the alien mother ship at the end of the film. In 1998, the Collector’s Edition was released on home video with a limited theatrical run and featured Spielberg’s definitive director’s cut with changes, some small and subtle, as well as a change eliminating the interior mother ship scenes from the end of the Special Edition, thus restoring the original ending. The Close Encounters of the Third Kind: 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition is the first collection to include all three versions of the film.

The Blu-ray release provides for all three versions of Close Encounters of the Third Kind to be included on one 50GB disc through a process known as “seamless branching,” made possible with the added interactivity of Blu-ray’s software and the robust processing power of the second generation players. This process identifies the differences between each version of the film and segments the footage accordingly. These segments are then encoded and assembled into three unique playlists, thus allowing footage used in all three films to be included on the Blu-ray disc only once. Based on the viewer’s selection of the Original Version, Special Edition or definitive Director’s Cut, each film will be presented seamlessly in its original form by use of its respective playlist.

Synopsis: Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Electrical lineman Roy Neary (Dreyfuss) is one of several people who experience a close encounter of the first kind, witnessing UFOs flying through the night sky. Meanwhile, government agents around the world have close encounters of the second kind, discovering physical evidence of extraterrestrial visitors in the form of lost fighter aircraft from World War II and a stranded military ship that disappeared decades earlier, only to suddenly reappear in the Sonora and Gobi Desert. Да не, просто на ebay'e часто пытаются спихнуть сомнительного качества и происхождения китайские поделки туповатым американцам ищущим что-то подешевле. Еще с Х-Файлов началось, когда Р1 боксы стоили по 150 баксов, все было завалено китайскими копиями 'всего' по 70 долларов за сезон.

А чем он лучше четырехдискового Р1 вышедшего лет шесть назад? Если только директорскую версию первого в Германии положат, ведь там она уже выходила отдельно, но ради малозначительных шести секунд гадости перепокупать не стоит.

Из моих трех изданий, только на Р1 есть closed captions для PC и амерыканских ТВ, нормальных субтитров нет.

Во все продаваемые в америке ТВ встраивается декодер-чип, так как почти все ТВ шоу и программы транслируется вместе с этими CC, которые как субтитры для глухих или слабослышащих, с экстра информацией, типа описываемой музыки, шумов, и т.д. Это закон на федеральном уровне заставляющий все ТВ студии и все кабельные и спутниковые компании прилагать такой сервис.

Эти CC технологически близки к нашему телетексту. В MPEG-2 поток они встроены в цифровом виде (посимвольно, и, сдается мне, прямо внутри video-потока пришиты), плеер перегоняет символы в район 21й(?) строки кадра в аналоговом сигнале на видеовыходе. В телеящике декодер СС находит во входном видео то, что ему нужно, и формирует буквы нужным шрифтом и цветом (ну а плеер комповый, типа PowerDVD, формирует сразу после декодирования потока).
Субитры отличаются тем, что это subpicture - в простейшем случае двухцветные (цвет букв/прозр. фон) маски-изображения и не ограничены буквами, это может быть любая картинка (были бонусы, кажется, на каких-то "резервуарных собачках" которые сделаны из субтитров и занимали 20-30% экрана). Иероглифы CJK гораздо удобнее иметь ввиде субтитров, чтоб не возиться с кучами кодировок.
В случае субтитров изображение формирует не чип в телеящике, а видеопроцессор в DVD-плеере. Ну и там есть всякие DVD-меню для включения-выключения. Раз субтитры это лишь один из компонентов MPEG-2 потока, их можно напихать довольно много к одному видео, что мы и видем на некоторых R2 дисках. СС может быть только один поток на один видео-поток.
На некоторых DVD (Man on Fire R1, я об этом писал) одни и те же субтитры технически продублированы для WS/LB варианта, и плеер в зависимости от своих настроек берет тот вариант, который ему нуна. Пользователь этого дублирования не видит.
А на некоторых HD-DVD (французский T2) сделано еще круче - юзер может менять размер субтитров и двигать их по полю картинки (это для этото T2 важно, т.к. при английской звукодороге французские сабы форсированы).
Исходя из вышенаписанного, делать текстовый файл с субтитрами для divx очень легко из СС - там практически никакой работы не надо; а для того, чтобы текстовый файл сделать из субтитров - надо буквы в картинке распознавать.

В силу описанного выше, скорее всего наши плееры не формируют СС сигнал на аналоговых выходах, а ящики не имеют декодеров СС(от нашенского телетекста есть небольшие форматные отличия). Вот у нас и не работает это.
В цифровом ТВ [имеются ввиду DVB-системы], где тоже MPEG-2 взят за основу, поддержка есть и для телетекста и для субтитров.
